Unsecured personal line of credit

Understand what stays available on a credit line

A credit limit is not a loan balance. Follow the movement of draws and principal repayments, then check how the agreement prices that flexibility.

Work with the numbers

Track a credit line through draws and a principal payment

Change the example to see the difference between a credit limit, an outstanding balance and available credit. Enter only the part of a payment applied to principal.

Adjust the illustrative figures, then calculate.

Calculations stay in your browser. No figures are submitted or saved. This tool is an illustration, not an approval, recommendation or loan quote.

Three numbers, three jobs

Separate the limit, balance and available credit

NumberWhat it meansWhat can change it
Credit limitThe account ceiling set by the agreementThe lender may change or restrict the limit under the agreement
Outstanding balanceWhat has been borrowed and remains unpaid; statements may also include chargesNew draws, principal payments, interest and fees
Available creditThe amount the account currently permits you to drawCleared payments, holds, draw rules and account standing

Pricing the account

Interest is only one part of a credit-line cost

Check the rate and its basis

Ask whether the interest rate is fixed or variable, which balance it applies to and how often it accrues. The APR, the periodic interest rate and a dollar draw fee are not interchangeable.

A line may have charges when funds are drawn or when the account is maintained. A low balance does not by itself establish a low total cost.

Read the minimum-payment rule

A required payment may cover charges as well as principal. Paying $100 does not necessarily restore $100 of credit. Ask how much reduces principal, when the payment clears and whether a new draw is permitted.

Before using the account

Ask for these account terms in writing

  • The credit limit, initial draw and any minimum draw amount.
  • The cost of each draw and any monthly or annual account charge.
  • The minimum-payment formula and allocation between charges and principal.
  • When cleared payments restore available credit and what can block a draw.
  • The rate-change, late-payment, early-payoff and account-closure rules.

Credit-line questions

What the account label does not answer

Does unsecured mean no credit check?

No. Unsecured describes collateral, not the lender’s inquiry or underwriting process. Confirm what reports are used and at which stage.

Can I redraw as soon as I make a payment?

Do not assume that. The payment may need to clear, charges may be paid first and the account may have draw restrictions. The calculator models principal only.

Will minimum payments retire the balance on a fixed date?

The agreement’s formula and any later draws determine that. Request a payoff estimate with no new borrowing to see the repayment path.

Is a credit line the same as a credit-card cash advance?

They are different agreements. A card cash advance may have its own fee and interest terms. Identify the product rather than relying on the words cash advance.

What credit line did Zoom Cash describe?

The 2019 website listed an unsecured line of credit of $200–$1,000 and access to available credit after payments. It did not establish the rates and account terms needed for a current offer.

Understand the account before continuing

Read the current lender’s limit, charges and repayment rules. An application does not confirm a line or amount.

Sources and how to read these figures

Zoom Cash product figures retain the year of their source. They do not confirm a current offer. Consumer guidance explains the general product; the written agreement determines an actual transaction.
